The Crisping Sleeve

by Erin Shirey

It went all right, the blind date. No, I mean, it...see, I've been
trying. I've been trying to stop being the old Dave and be the good
guy--David--I go by David now. Anyway, we were finishing dinner and
she was talking about how she'd read about this woman who microwaved
her baby and how they could tell the chick'd nuked it because there
was burning on the inside but not the outside and I didn't, I mean, I
thought it, but I wasn't going to say it. David doesn't say those
things, right? Well, anyway, it slipped out and she got all upset and
I tried to tell her it wasn't a serious question, you know--it was
just a joke. I told her I only thought of it because I make a lot of
microwave burritos and things, you know? But, I mean, it probably
wouldn't have worked out anyway. Does your other sister have a better
sense of humor?
