untitled

by Vincent Dawkins

i watched dinosaurs fight on tv tonight
outside there are trees and grass
they sprawl across this land like green oil
leaking from hundreds of capsized ocean liners
natives, colonists, slaves, tyrannosaurs
this soil is rich in history
it is the first of 13 colonies
substianial in shaping the
definitions of liberty and freedom
i think about my ancestors
who were they?  what were they?
i wonder if the family tree's roots run deeper
than the ones outside
i rarely get to visit here
but when i see the headstones of my relatives
i feel like i am home and that
my history is important
