13 Ways of Looking at the Ocean

by Andrea Lopez

I)    The sweet lull of
The seaside
Calls me to its
Salty sweet escape

II)    From the bikini-clad
Bodies
The ocean waves
Hit the tropical
Sands
Beating in time
With the heart of a summer
Fling

III)    You play hide and seek
Bringing the unsuspecting
Visitors to uncharted
Fantasy islands

IV)    These seas
Are directions
Bringing people from
Markets
And treasures
To the world

V)    The home of the smugglers
Scallywags and Thieves
The ocean’s his
Lady
And she deals in the
Unknown
The sailor, the pirate
Her son

VI)    It works as a zoo
An unsuspecting cradle
Of all kinds of
Life
The multicolored school
The ocean holds the
Most expansive cities

VII)    At night I lie there
By the ocean’s caress
I wait for her lullaby
To wash away
The bitter-sweet memories

VIII)    She cries songs of
Pleasure
A labyrinth of lies
The sounds of
Young maids
Mer is their language

IX)    I drown in its vastness
Afraid of the unknown
It fills my lungs
Icy ocean water

X)    I follow the foot prints
The ocean fades them
Away

XI)    She crashes
The waves
Scaring the creatures
She storms over
Ships

XII)    They eat cotton
Clouds
Taking away laughter
And sit by the
Docks
In the cool ocean
Air

XIII)    The under toe catches
Dragging the surf
Takes us away
Floating
The sea foam grabs your hair
