Poetry. " The National Poetry Foundation in publishing Fearing's COMPLETE POEMS is performing a necessary public service, for he is one of a kind. To him America was already an all-enveloping nightmare in which he felt trapped like a rat and from which he could not awaken. Today of course we are all caught in that nightmare, especially the nightmare of political and commercial image making. Fearing's language, which is what you would have heard in a newsroom in the Middle West in the 1930s, plain and ordinary, has a cadence, a music of its own, not borrowed from any English or French literary models, or any other, that's distinctively American. The reader coming on new to Fearing will get a surprise, an immediate, refreshing shower of unmitigated reality and some laughs and lots of poignancy and healing sarcasm. LI have only one regret, that Fearing is not here to witness his continuing durability"-Carl Rakosi.
