Josely Vianna Baptista was born in Curitiba, southern Brazil, in 1957 and currently lives on the island of Santa Catarina.
A poet, translator, and editor, she is the author of eight volumes of poetry, prose, and children's writing, winning several awards including the prestigious Jabuti Prize in 1999 for her translations of the Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges. Her most recent collection is Sol sobre nuvens (Perspectiva, 2007).
Vianna Baptista's work has been recognized internationally, and her poetry has been translated into English (ON THE SHINING SCREEN OF THE EYELIDS; Manifest Press, 2003) and Spanish (Los poros floridos; Aldus, 2002). Her work has appeared in anthologies in eleven countries, and she was the only author of her generation to be included in the recent volume The Oxford Book of Latin American Poetry (Oxford University Press, 2009).
