Cultural Writing. Latino/Latina studies. The Durito stories are some of the most literary and complex Zapatista communiques. Their narratives combine political critique, satire, historical debate, literary seduction, and poetry, and regularly change register from elevated theoretical language to popular Mexican word play or albures, indigenous and foreign languages, archaic and peninsular Spanish, and Caló (a hybrid language spoken along the U.S.-Mexico border). While other Marcos collections have excerpted these stories from the communiques in which they originally appeared, Conversations With Durito contextualizes each one within the original communique, presenting them not simply as stories, but as documents of particular moments in the Zapatista struggle. Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos, or Subcomandante Marcos,is the de facto spokesman for the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), a Mexican rebel movement. He is known as Delegado Cero in matters concerning the Other Campaign. Marcos is an author, political poet, and outspoken opponent of globalization, capitalism and neo-liberalism. Marcos wants the Mexican constitution changed to recognize the rights of the country's indigenous Mexicans. The internationally known guerrillero has been described as a "new" and "postmodern" Che Guevara, or a cross between Mad Max and Zorro. Since 1994, his writings have been published internationally in several languages.
