Though [my father] did continue to support me in a choice he disapproved, he had by no means given up hope ... When my first book appeared, however, he became seriously threatened -- this really might confirm me in a life of folly. 'For God's sake,' he said, 'when are you going to give up all this nonsense and settle down to something serious? Don't you see that you'll never amount to a hill of beans with this sort of thing?' Several weeks later, the book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize (The House of Snodgrass). Responsible for the emergence of American confessional poetry, W.D.
