Poetry. East Asia Studies. Translated from the Chinese by Jonathan Chaves. These poems by one of China's four masters of 12th century Southern Sung poetry are perfect verbalizations of the magnificient landscape paintings of the Sung painters: misty, ethereal and luminous. The poetry also, however, also holds the annoyances of over-work, aching feet, creaking bones, and the pleasure of wine, filling it with a delightful humanity and zest for life. Jonathan Chaves is a professor of Chinese at George Washington University and the translator of several volumes of poetry, including PILGRIM OF THE CLOUDS: POEMS AND ESSAYS FROM MING DYNASTY CHINA (White Pine Press, 2005) and WEST CLIFF POEMS: THE POETRY OF WENG CHÜAN (Ahadada Books, 2010).
