Fiction. Tom La Farge's new novel revisits the animal world he created in his acclaimed books The Crimson Bears and A Hundred Doors. Following a failed bid for tribal dominance, the protagonist, Zuntig the Swamp Ape, discovers that she can change her shape and restart her story as another sort of animal. As she shifts, every new body imposes its own desires and sends Zuntig hunting for the habitat where she will be at home. However, each new shape retains the memory of her first home and story, and she struggles with adaptation. La Farge follows Zuntig on her wild journey, layering story upon story in prose that alternately mimics Dickinson, Austen, Tolkien, Blake, Coleridge, Shelley and Emerson, while marinating a fresh, unique voice.
