Fiction. In this book of twenty-four stories, or "personal mythologies," Greek novelist and poet Andreas Embiricos combines history, myth, poetry, and psychology to create a sensual, original, and fabulous universe. His characters, defying all convention, behave like the ancient gods in their often murderous and pleasure-seeking expeditions, fulfilling instincts latent in everyone. Born in 1901, Andreas Embiricos worked in the offices of the London-based Byron Steamship Company (which belonged to his family) between 1921 and 1925. He later moved to Paris, where he joined the surrealist group or Andre Breton.
