Poetry. FIRST WORDS was begun in 1995 as an exercise in which Messerli embedded the first word or two of poetry by other poets, but the series gradually transformed into a personal document of despair and potentiality -- "Through what beautiful strung / adventure will next / trot -- its own energies." Messerli is the author of eight books of poetry, including A LONG WITHOUT, AFTER, and THE WALLS COME TRUE. Each is available from SPD.
