Poetry. Art. Moved by the beauty and private qualities of the Book of Hours, artist Courtney Gregg and poet Dennis Phillips were also interested in the problems presented by the elitist origins of the books and the subservient role of the illuminations to the text. With these and other concerns in mind, the collaborators established only one formal premise: that the structural basis of both halves of the project would be the 24 hours of the day. The result is two parallel 'texts,' one I language, one in gesture. Dennis Phillips is the author of nine books of poetry. He is a founding editor/publisher of Littoral Books, past Book Review Editor of Sulfur magazine, and a past director of the Beyond Baroque Foundation. Phillips is an instructor at Art Center College of Design. Courtney Gregg has had group and solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, Piacenza and San Francisco.
