Poetry. Art. "Self, identity, desire, relation to language, relation to place." Thus begins the prefatory prose section to GEOGRAPHY OF PARTS, thus does Travis Ortiz declare his geography, his parts. Confronting the task of establishing a field of desire. One could not anticipate the results, especially when the focus would be turned to such a sprawling landscape as Southern California—and even San Diego, the city and county. Thus does Travis Ortiz map his focus, his boundless boundaries. Typeset and designed by the author, this book-length poem has an exquisite sense of space and breath, strikingly precise visual images spliced into and onto the text, a true commitment to the breadth of experience / but / in / parts.
