Fiction. Jewish Studies. These twelve short stories are based on Fabri's experiences in the Holocaust at age 14. Each tightly woven story explores what happened to Fabri, but from others' perspectives. Here is the Hungarian peasant who dressed in her Sunday black damask with her Bible to witness the removal of the village doctor. Other stories explore those who struggle to figure out the words behind the words. The Commandant, who is after all only a soldier, numbs himself before choosing people to die. There is the young woman who is proud of her career as a foreman in the labor camp. Another woman offers her life for a crazy person, the only one who realizes she was chosen to die. In speaking what no one wants to hear, Fabri ends with the tale about those who deny these stories. These stories, based on experiences Fabri knew, resonate wherever there is denial and people who do their jobs and keep their shutters closed as others are persecuted.
