Poetry. Truth-telling with a homespun accent, these poems reflect the poet's raising in a logging town in Washington state. Beneath the sweetness of some language is a sense of threat, endangered sexuality, and the need to create a makeshift existence to keep promise and courage alive.

Author City: JUNEAU, AK USA

Jenifer Rae Vernon is the daughter of a logger, one generation removed from the family's Appalachian origins. She attended Evergreen College on scholarship, later traveled and worked her way across Europe and northern Africa, and returned to complete a doctoral degree in Rhetoric and Communications at the University of California at San Diego in 2008. She teaches college in Juneau, Alaska.
