Jenifer Rae Vernon is the daughter of a logger, one generation removed from the family's Appalachian origins. She attended Evergreen College on scholarship, later traveled and worked her way across Europe and northern Africa, and returned to complete a doctoral degree in Rhetoric and Communications at the University of California at San Diego in 2008. She teaches college in Juneau, Alaska.
