Poetry. Written in 1991, this previously unpublished work dates back to the publication of such seminal books as The Crystal Text, AT EGYPT, and ODES OF ROBA. Based on his trips to St. Petersburg, THIS TIME WE ARE BOTH uses a dense stream-of-conscious style that employs a fragmentary, often reverse syntax that is a hallmark of Coolidge's poetics. Phrases and images leaps between lines to evoke a heady mix of anxiety and paranoia that document and respond to the collapse of the Soviet Union and a city on the verge of starvation and deterioration. Clark Coolidge (b. February 26, 1939) is an American poet born in Providence, Rhode Island. Often associated with the Language School, his experience as a Jazz drummer and interest in a wide array of subjects--including caves, geology, bebop, weather, Salvador Dali, Jack Kerouac, and movies--often finds correspondence in his work. Coolidge grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, and has lived, among other places, in Manhattan, Cambridge (MA), San Francisco, Rome (Italy), and the Berkshire Hills. He currently lives in Petaluma, California.
