things we don't talk about

by Jeremy Miller

my parents wouldn’t lock their home
when classes ended i’d be first home
I’d look through their night-stand drawers

then my parents locked their house
i had to use the house key

the house key was in the hidden compartment of my backpack
i put the key in the front door
it wouldn’t go in completely

i stepped back and kicked the key with my right shoe
the key bent off in the door
