Born in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, Dick Witts grew up as a musician, playing cello and percussion. At Manchester, he played with the Hallé Orchestra and new music ensembles, before becoming interested in post-punk music and setting up the Manchester Musicians Collective. While in The Passage he toured Europe, Scandinavia and North America, recording four albums and a number of singles. He was also involved in television and radio presentation, and he wrote three books—an acclaimed biography of Nico, a history of the Arts Council called Artist Unknown and a study of The Velvet Underground. Now a professor of music at Edge Hill University, and an advisor to the music ensemble Icebreaker, he is writing a book about music policy at the BBC.
