Poetry. African & African American Studies. Latino/Latina Studies. Women's Studies. Translated from the Spanish by Pamela Carmell. Bilingual Edition. Honorable Mention, 2016 International Latino Book Award for Best Bilingual Poetry Book. A collection of poetry by the world famous Afro-Cuban belle des letres Nancy Morejón. According to Alice Walker, "Morejón's poems remind us that all worlds are complex, complicated, dense. Sometimes it is only the poet's breath that holds together the disparities, some of them achingly diverse." The power of her lyrical voice mesmerizes. Most of these poems have never before appeared in English, and Pamela Carmell's delicate touch does tribute to their depth and intricacy. The theme of the collection is love, in all its forms—from romantic love, to familial affection, to patriotic fervor. Known as a feminist and a powerfully political player of the Cuban Revolution, Morejón reveals a different side of herself in this bilingual volume. Experience depths of passion and pride as experienced and represented by one of the most uniquely talented poets of our time.
With a poetic production that spans more than half a century and has achieved enormous popularity, Nancy Morejón was awarded the Cuban National Literature Prize in 2001. Morejón's most recent awards are the Gold Crown of Macedonia (2006), the Rafael Alberti Award (2007), plus the Gallega Universal Writer (2008) and the prestigious Latin American Studies Association Award (2012). In 2013 she was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic. In 2008, Morejón was elected president of the Association of Writers of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas Cubanos (UNEAC), a position she held for many years. She has been Director of the Cuban Academy of Language and the Caribbean Studies Center at Casa de las Américas, Havana, epicenter of Cuban and Latin American intelligentsia. Since 2001 she has served as Director of UNEAC's Revista Unión. Prize-winning translators have rendered her poetry into more than ten languages.
