Poetry. "Poetry is my beat, and I pound it like an Irish cop in some old movie. The characters you will encounter in these pages—carnal wraiths, Elysian Fielders, end rhyme addicts, and worse—populate the mean streets of that circumscribed world without end." So says klipschutz about PREMEDITATIONS, a thematic collection as singular as its title, the harvest of half a lifetime's deep, idiosyncratic, and irreverent engagement with an embattled art form, and with individual poems and poets themselves. A San Franciscan, klipschutz starts with his early heroes, the Beats and the New York School, and from there ranges widely, to the American Modernists, the Greeks and Romans, and all manner of times and places in between.
Born in Indio, CA, klipschutz left high school early to travel the U.S. by thumb, then lived in Laurel Canyon, Echo Park, and Hollywood before a short stint at Naropa. First marriage, San Francisco, Gallup polls (door-to-door), first fruits: The Erection of Scaffolding for the Re-Painting of Heaven by the Lowest Bidder (o.p.). Recently, he was shocked to discover that he has published six previous collections. As well, he has co-written approximately 100 songs that have been released by Chuck Prophet. With Jeremy Gaulke, between 2014 and 2017 he edited the collectible minimag Four by Two through twelve issues (a complete set resides in the Special Collections Library at U.C. Berkeley.) The high-water mark of his lucrative side hustle as a journalist was a 7K word review- essay on the great Frank Stanford, published in Toad Suck Review. klipschutz lives in San Francisco with Colette Jappy and three tuxedo cats.Author City: SAN FRANCISCO, CA USA
