Poetry. Translated from the French by Matthew B. Smith. Frédéric Forte's brief and fleeting poems in SEVEN STRING QUARTETS borrow the structure and arrangement of the string quartet, but rather than performing in concert, they keep tuning up their instruments, figeting and fussing, sighing and shrugging, until they quietly and elegantly exit the stage. Throughout the work, one is swept along by what turns out to be a surprisingly subtle, finely nuanced performance.
Frédéric Forte is the author of over 15 collections of poetry, often based on formal or thematic constraints, including SEVEN STRING QUARTETS (La Presse, 2014) and MINUTE-OPERAS (Burning Deck, 2015). He has translated the American poet Michelle Noteboom into French and, with Bénédicte Vilgrain, the German poet and Oulipian Oskar Pastior. He has been a member of the Oulipo since 2005 and lives and works in Paris.
