Poetry. Croation Literature. In his third solo book with Harbor Mountain Press, Mario Susko's wit and precision are on display with ferocity: "It's hard to be / a transient / in one's literature— / I walk the streets, / carrying a travel bag with things one / throws in when not expecting to return," and "I have overdosed on words, those that were / supposed to keep the past in remission." His facility for language is like no other. In Susko's lines, poetry is redeemed.
Mario Susko is the recipient of numerous awards, starred reviews (Publishers Weekly), and international recognition. In 2012, The Walt Whitman Birthplace association named him Poet Of The Year. That year he was also elected into the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 2013 he was named The Poet Laureate, Long Island. He was awarded The Goran's Wreath award, in 2015, given to poets for their overall contribution to poetry. Mario Susko is also a translator of Saul Bellow, William Styron, Kurt Vonnegut, James Baldwin, Walt Whitman, and others. With Branko Cegec, he is the co-editor of Surfacing: Contemporary Croatian Poetry. Mario's work has been published in Croatia, Hungary, Russia, India, England, Holland, the US, Austria, Italy, Sweden and elsewhere. He's been called "the most intelligent and passionate poet alive today."Author City: GARDEN CITY, NY USA
